Just to remind you of the next West of Scotland Pain group meeting on Wednesday 25th January 2012. This meeting has been organised by the two Glasgow pain fellows, Dr Vishal Gupta, and Dr Fahim Anwar, with four trainees presenting on the topics below1. Andrew Harvey- New opioids side effects.2. Sunder Muthukrishnan- Prevalence of chronic pain after caesarean section.3. Sashi Kiran - Techniques of perioperative pain relief in elective thoracotomy patients.4. Present were: David Craig, Robin McKinlay, Jonathan Oates and Lars Williams.

1. Committee posts: Lew-Chin Chee has stepped down as treasurer, and we thank her for her hard work over the years. Jonathan Oates kindly agreed to fill the post of treasurer, and David Craig has stepped in as secretary. Lars Williams will stay on for another year as chairman.

2. Evening meetings: attendance over the year 2007-8 has been reasonable, though still not as high as we had hoped. We all agreed we should concentrate more on local speakers - there are a lot of initiatives and projects taking place in the west of Scotland, and the WoSPG could be a good forum for presenting and publicising local work. The NBPA meetings are probably a better place for 'big name' speakers.

3. Venue: we know the SGH isn't ideal, and we'll look again into finding a more central venue, eg the Royal College of Physicians building on St Vincent St.

4. Training days: in recognition of our growing membership, many of whom are relatively new to the field of pain, we are hoping to hold an educational / training day in the near future, with a mixture of teaching and workshops. Possible topics include communication skills, research and audit.

5. 2008-9 meetings: a few ideas were discussed, and David will be getting in touch with potential speakers soon. We will retain the current arrangement of 3 meetings (one every 2nd month), plus the joint meeting with the East of Scotland Group, maybe Feb 09. We will reinstate the postal notification of meetings (the 'wee card') as well as continuing with e-mails.

Recent developments include posting of links to other pain organisations, BPS, IASP, etc. The website has attracted favourable comment from readers / listeners in the US, and one US trainee got in touch via the website to ask about a sabbatical in Glasgow

(iii) Venue & Catering
The Walton Centre at the Southern General has proven a good (and cheap) venue, probably easier to reach for most than the EDC. The venue will be demolished at some time over the next few years but we will continue to use it for as long as we can. LW looked into alternatives, including the Royal College and Lang’s hotel, but these would be too expensive at our current level of income.

Catering for the coming season still to be arranged. We have tried both internal and external options and neither has been entirely satisfactory. A takeaway curry or similar might be ideal? We will look into this option for the forthcoming programme.

3. Chairman’s Report
Robin thanked the committee for their hard work during the last year, particularly all the work involved in setting up the joint meeting. Robin announced his intention to step down, and suggested that Lars take over as Chairman, in order to keep some continuity and also to establish a precedent whereby the secretary goes on to become chair.

4. Election of new committee members
Before tonight’s meeting, both Robin and Lew-Chin announced their imminent departure from the committee, with Lars hoping to escape too. Unfortunately we could find no-one to take over our posts….So, Lew-Chin has kindly agreed to stay on as treasurer for the time being, Lars will act as chairman, and we will headhunt a new secretary.

David and Fiona have kindly agreed to acting as specialty representatives for, respectively, psychology and pharmacy. These new posts will include responsibility for advertising the group to the post-holders’ specialties, and suggesting and arranging talks relevant to these specialties.

6. AOCB
We had some discussion about the rolling educational programme of tutorials, co-ordinated by the current pain fellow. When this programme first started, we ran the tutorials before the WoSPG meetings to maximise attendance, although this meant starting the tutorials at 5pm sharp. Over the last few years the tutorial programme has become increasingly popular, with people coming to the tutorials from throughout the city, so the 5pm start is proving difficult. We decided it would be best to separate the tutorials from the main WoSPG programme, although we will continue to advertise them through the WoSPG website.

TREASURER’S REPORT 2006-7
I am pleased to announce that our finances continue to be in good health. We had a surplus of £148.25 from this year. This is due to a combination of factors. Firstly, the free venue for meeting, this year at the Southern General Hospital, with no promotional stand fee. Secondly, very meticulous planning on the committee’s behalf to ensure that we had a good delegate attendance and support from pharmaceutical companies to offset the costs of the joint meeting in March.

It has been a pleasure to serve the group.However, after three years, I feel it is time to relinquish this post to another willing volunteer. New energy is required to be injected into this post to ensure that we can continue to organise high quality meetings which will attract all of those involved in the business of pain in the West of Scotland.

The joint meeting at Lang's hotel was a great success, despite the train strike and the football....thanks to all who made the effort to come.

The last remaining meeting for this academic year is the AGM, which will be on wednesday 9th may, at 7.30pm.
Just like last year, we'll hold the AGM in a nice Glasgow pub, moving on to a pleasant restaurant for something to eat once the business has concluded. A most agreeable way to spend an evening, I'm sure you'll agree. Although last year the only people who turned up were the committee themselves.

Hopefully this year turnout will be better, because the current committee, having served their 3 years, are planning to step down after the AGM. This means we need to find a new treasurer, secretary and chairman (although I might stay on as chairman for the sake of continuity between committees....). It could be you! The committee posts are open to anyone who regularly attends the meetings. This is your chance to influence the direction the group takes, organise talks you think will be interesting, etc etc.

Please e-mail me if you're interested in attending the AGM, and I'll arrange a venue based on how many will be attending.

Minutes from the AGM

The last session held at the Ebenezer Duncan centre, a joint meeting between chronic pain and palliative care staff, was well-attended and very well received. Although not part of the West of Scotland Pain Group programme, Pete MacKenzie kindly let me advertise the Group to members of the palliative team who attended, and we manged to get a few e-mail addresses to add to the mailing list. So, for those of you who've just joined the mailing list, welcome!

We had an informal AGM in a city centre pub a few weeks ago, and I remained sober enough to take some minutes, which you will find appended to this e-mail, along with the treasurer's report. To save you having to open and read the whole lot, I'll provide a quick summary here:

Attendance hasn't been great, averaging 15 or so per meeting, though it did seem to be picking up towards the end.

A few have complained that the EDC is difficult to get to, so we decided to give another venue a try this year, the Walton Centre at the Southern General in Glasgow. This, I'm told, brings the Group full circle, as it started off meeting at the Walton 20 or so years ago.

We plan to revert back to the original day as well, the first Tuesday of the month. This should make it easier to remember the meetings.

The most controversial change we've planned is to reduce the number of meetings to 3, from 6. Everyone seems to be busy and no-one likes giving up their free time to attend evening meetings, so this should ease the burden, and hopefully improve attendance. The question now is whether we should have 2 speakers / meeting? Any thoughts, please let me know.

Finally, on a positive note, we're going to get outside caterers for the food...another reason to make the effort and attend in October when the meetings start up again. In the meantime, for any late-breaking news, check our website at:

(iii) Venue & Catering
The EDC has been a good venue in terms of facilities and cost (free!), but it is difficult to get to from the other Glasgow hospitals. We discussed venue change again, and decided that the Walton Centre in the Southern General campus might be a suitable alternative. We will confirm according to availability.
We will arrange external catering for the coming season.

(iv) Frequency of Meetings
We wonder if we could improve attendance by decreasing the frequency of our meetings. This would lessen the burden on those who find it difficult to attend due to home and family commitments. We could have slightly longer meetings, perhaps with 2 speakers, e.g. speaking for 30 mins, plus 20-30 mins for discussion?
Planned dates for meetings: revert to first Tuesday of the month, October, December, February (for joint meeting)

(v) Joint meeting with the East of Scotland Pain Group
Our turn to arrange the meeting this year, provisionally February 2007. Suggestions for 'star' speakers welcome. Possible venue = Royal College of Physicians, but we’ll look into a hotel option as well.

Our fortunes have turned this year with the group making a surplus of £648.38. The main reason for this is the change to a free venue with no promotional stand fee, and less costly catering.

We have closed our Premier Bonus account. The balance from this account has been transferred to the Treasurer’s account to make servicing the Group’s accounts easier.

With our finances looking healthy again we are in a good position to continue to organise high quality education meetings for the Pain Group and also to offer education sponsorship. Our efforts will be guided by the attendance at these meetings.

The West of Scotland AGM will be held on Wednesday 24th May, at a time (evening) and venue to be confirmed. We'll be going over business matters, incl treasurer's report, etc. We'll also be discussing ideas for next season's meetings. The AGM is open to any members of the WoSPG, as are the positions of chair, treasurer and secretary.

This year, to make things more pleasant for the long-suffering office-bearers, we will be holding the meeting somewhere nice, like a pub or a restaurant in Glasgow. If you intend coming please let me know by e-mail by the end of April, so that I can book somewhere according to numbers.

Otherwise, we are always open to any ideas for future talks, or different venues or times. Even if you can't make the AGM, please e-mail suggestions to me.

The McEwen Report - Where are we now? Part 1: Personal view by Dr Mike Basler

Chronic Pain Services in Scotland (known as 'The McEwen Report') was published in 2004. It was commissioned by the Scottish Executive and carried out by Professor James McEwen.

Professor McEwen's remit was:
"Through a process that includes consultation with key stakeholders, including NHS Boards, the Pain Association and Pain Concern (as representatives of the interests of patients), the Scottish Network for Chronic Pain Research, the Physiotherapy
Pain Association, Aberdeen Pain Research Group and individual clinicians with a particular expertise, which includes some members of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Chronic Pain, to produce a report that:
reviews referral protocols for the treatment of chronic pain;
reviews the current range of services in each of the health boards for treating chronic pain;
draws conclusions about the level of services for treating chronic pain across Scotland, compared to the recommendations made by the 1994 report by a working group of the National Medical Advisory Committee on the Management of Patients with Chronic Pain and the 2000 Clinical Standard Advisory Group Report on Services for
Patients with Pain;
makes recommendations on how to improve the level of service across Scotland."

At the West of Scotland Pain Group meeting on Wednesday 14th December 2005, we discussed the Report and its implications. The meeting was recorded and I have divided it into three parts. In this programme we hear a personal view by Dr Mike Basler, Consultant Anaesthetist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Rev David Mitchell is a minister in the Church of Scotland and Lecturer in Palliative Care in Glasgow.

In his lecture to the West of Scotland Pain Group on Wednesday 23rd November, he challenged the audience with a number of questions:

On Wednesday 12th October 2005, Fiona Allen, Prescribing Support Pharmacist, addressed members of the West of Scotland Pain Group.

In her talk, Fiona Allen discussed the role of the Prescribing Support Pharmacist Team in reviewing patients who have been prescribed NSAIDs and Cox II inhibitors. She also invited pain clinicians to develop closer links with the service, which is based in primary care.

Rolling Educational Programme

This tutorial programme has been developed to meet the educational
requirements of anaesthetic trainees in the West of Scotland who wish to
develop a sub-specialty interest in pain management. Although designed
primarily for anaesthetic trainees, the lectures and tutorials are open to
all interested healthcare professionals.

Mr Duncan McNeil (Greenock and Inverclyde) (Lab): To ask the Scottish Executive whether it has any plans to ring-fence funding or to establish separate budgets for the treatment of chronic pain.

Mr Andy Kerr: The Executive has no such plans. NHS boards are expected to fund services from the unified budgets made available to them by the Executive. The Executive is, however, looking at ways to make a more efficient use of resources. We have made the report of an independent review of chronic pain services available to NHS boards and will be holding a conference to discuss best practice on pain management on 8 July 2005.

Mr Duncan McNeil (Greenock and Inverclyde) (Lab): To ask the Scottish Executive what action it will take on the recommendations contained in the report of Professor James McEwen on the provision of chronic pain services, with particular reference to the formation of a national managed clinical network.
